Mosport Race Hits Record Petroleum Displacement of 47%

July 29, 2011

Muscle Milk Team Cytosport and Corvette Racing both took home Michelin Green X Challenge awards for earning the cleanest, fastest and most efficient scores at the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) Mosport International Raceway July 24, 2011. The race set a landmark petroleum displacement of 47.3%, compared to racing on traditional all-petroleum racing fuel.

The Muscle Milk Team Cytosport’s Lola Aston Marton scored its third straight Michelin Green X Challenge award for the Prototype category. The team had the best combination of the three scoring factors – clean, fast and efficient – and placed 19% ahead of the second place team, Dyson Racing. Muscle Milk’s lowest-in-class clean score can be attributed to its use of E85 for the race.

The number 4 Chevrolet Corvette won the GT category for the first time this year by showing race-winning speed, impressive efficiency and outstanding environmental performance. Car 4 placed second best in the race for efficiency and placed first in class for clean while using E85. Car 56 of BMW Team RLL Racing followed second in the challenge, with the Risi Competizione Ferrari 458 Italia trailing a close third. All five of the top GT Michelin Green X Challenge finishers were within four-tenths of a point from each other, the closest finish yet, and all used E85 fuel.

Since this season began, petroleum displacement levels have steadily increased, setting an impressive pace. The series began at Sebring International Raceway in March, where teams displaced more than 28% of petroleum, and continued by reaching a displacement of 35% at the Long Beach Grand Prix in April. The series surpassed that with 45% at the Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park in July, and is likely to continue on this trajectory due to the popularity and performance of efficient technologies and renewable fuels.
